The annual German-African festival has a long tradition. "Farafina in Tiergarten" (the original name) took place for the first time in 1994, organized by the Afrikahaus Berlin, the association farafina e. V. and the district of Tiergarten. The gallery Nord and the teahouse in the English garden were available as rooms. After the Berlin district fusion, the name changed to "Farafina in Mitte".
In 2002 an exhibition was held parallel to Tiergarten-Mitte for the first time, in the Kulturhaus Schöneberg in the gallery corridor 23.
Quarts e.V., the owner of the Schöneberg Gallery, had already organized exhibitions with African art. He also participated in art projects in Africa, such as the 1998 Biennale in Dakar. Most of the artists involved in 2002 had already collaborated with Quarts e.V.
